Proposed Transportation Sales and Use TaxThe Transportation Investment Act of 2010, puts a question to the voters of each region in the State of Georgia to support transportation infrastructure improvements, through the imposition of a proposed transportation sales and use tax. The voters will have their opportunity to vote on this proposed tax on July 31,2011. Over the past several months the Southern Georgia Regional Commission in cooperation with the Georgia Department of Transportation has undertaken a effort to educate elected officials and the public about this proposed tax and to create a regional project list to present to the voters. The Southern Georgia Regional Transportation Roundtable and its Executive Committee, over the period of several months, developed the project list available below. Under the law, once it is approved by the voters, the sales tax will provide for the construction of the projects listed below, plus 25% of the revenues of the tax will be distributed to each community based on a formula. If the tax fails to pass the voters, each local government will be required to match their existing Local Maintenance and Improvement Grant (LMIG) funds at a rate of 30%. If you have questions about this proposed transportation sales tax please contact Corey Hull or at 229-333-5277. Documents and Resources
